Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
-
Our first few appointments together will include a review of your history, your main concerns, and a discussion around what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping to achieve. This includes going over or uncovering your goals for therapy, which we’ll review throughout treatment. I’ll also go over informed consent—essentially, your rights to privacy and confidentiality, as well as times I may need to break confidentiality for safety reasons—and I will answer any initial questions you may have.
After we’re through the initial stages of therapy, regular follow-up sessions will be a unique experience tailored to your needs and the goals we identified together during your first few sessions. Our sessions will likely include a blend of talk therapy (like what you see on TV), coaching or behavioral therapy, trauma-informed therapy like IFS or EMDR, learning and practicing new skills, and mindfulness/body-based (somatic) work.
If there is a specific style of therapy you’re looking for, let me know. If I don’t offer the type of therapy you’re looking for, I’ll work with you to find someone who does.

I offer individual therapy sessions for adults over 18. I use an integrative approach, dependent on the client’s needs. I am trained in EMDR and IFS and pull from several styles of talk therapy. Our sessions may include cognitive and emotional inquiry, parts work, psychoeducation, goal setting, and practice of mindfulness/nervous system regulating skills. Some things that my clients deal with include recovery from difficult experiences and difficult relationships, ADHD, anxiety, identity development, relationship skills, and more.
I prefer to start clients on a once-weekly session cadence for at least 6 weeks, after which point we will check in and evaluate whether a change is needed. My sessions are 55 minutes long.

I offer telehealth for all of North Carolina, and in-person therapy sessions based out of my office near downtown Asheville. I’m in the office Tuesday-Thursday and am strictly virtual on Mondays. We can talk more about what might be the best option for you. If you’re using insurance, please be aware that benefits for telehealth coverage may vary, depending on your insurance company’s policies at any given time.
My office is located at 1000 Centrepark Drive, Asheville, NC 28805.

In the United States, mental health services are considered healthcare, and so any personal health information that you share with me during our work together is protected under HIPAA. What we talk about is our sessions will remain confidential (private). I am legally and ethically allowed to share your information only if you give me written & signed permission to do so—with a few key exceptions:
If I have reason to believe you may seriously injure or kill yourself, or if you tell me you have any intent, means, or plans to injure or kill yourself
If I have reason to believe you may seriously injure or kill someone else, or if you tell me you have any intent, means, or plans to injure or kill someone else
If you inform me of a child or vulnerable/dependent adult who is being abused
When I am ordered by a judge to do so
Please note: I can only ensure confidentiality and privacy when it comes to my end of things. If you are attending virtual therapy in a common space in your home, in public, or in any other area where others may be able to see or hear you, I cannot guarantee your confidentiality in those spaces. This is why I strongly recommend finding a spot that is quiet and where you can close a door between yourself and others in your home/environment. This makes it easier for us to talk about whatever you need to talk about, without concern for who might overhear.

I’m in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna and am considered an “out of network” provider for all other insurances. I verify insurance benefits before our first appointment to check copays, deductibles, etc., as each plan is unique.
My private pay rate is $150 per 55-minute appointment. I’m happy to offer a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement for those who are paying privately or for whom I am out of network. There are services like Mentaya that can make the superbill process easy!

Payment is expected at the time of service. This includes the fee for self-pay clients and any co-payments for insurance clients. I require all clients to keep at least one valid form of payment on file.
My cancelation policy requests two days notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. Therapy sessions are scheduled in advance and are a time reserved exclusively for you. When a session is canceled at the last minute, I lose the opportunity to offer this time to another client, such as someone on the waitlist or with urgent clinical needs.
Late cancellations and no-shows will be charged a fee of $125. You should note that insurance companies generally do not reimburse for missed appointments.

I see clients Monday through Thursday during regular business hours. I don’t offer evening or weekend appointments at this time.

Maybe! The most important part of therapy is finding someone you feel comfortable with, and it can be hard to tell until we meet for a session or two. I’m happy to offer a free 15-minute call to help you decide if you want to schedule an intake with me. During this call, I can answer any questions you might have about my services, hear more about your needs, schedule an intake session, or help get you pointed in the right direction if I’m not the right fit for you.
-
It’s important that you find the right fit when choosing a therapist. If you’re a new client, please schedule a free phone consultation to determine if I’m the right fit for you.
If you are a returning client and need to schedule or reschedule an appointment, you can do so on the client portal, by emailing me at selina@selinakellycounseling.com, or texting me at (828) 518-6560. -
Notice in accordance with the No Surprises Act, effective 1/1/2022, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises
